Frozen pipes can lead to messy clean up and unexpected bills. Being prepared my help you to avoid the unexpected disaster. Understanding how pipes freeze will help you better prepare to avoid a water loss due to frozen pipes.

Water expands as it freezes. When the expansion takes place, it puts pressure on the pipe, whether the pipe is metal or plastic. Expanding water can then cause the pipe to break. Pipes most likely to break are those that are exposed to severe cold. Outside hose bibs are frequent culprits. Water sprinkler lines and water supply pipes in unheated areas are also the common cause of frozen pipes.

To prevent frozen pipes take a a little time to prepare for cold weather.

  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the plumbing
  • If temperatures are extremely low, let the cold water drip from the faucet inside. Running water helps prevent pipes from freezing.
  • If you will be away from home, leave the heat on in your house, set no lower than 55 degrees.
